New York City

Day Two

Tuesday, 10/24/00 2220 hours.
Wow. Today was busy. Began with another hour plus ride on the subway to the World Trade Center. We decided to skip the conference today...hmmm...anyway, I digress. The World Trade Center had a big mall in it and the buildings were tall. Still don't know what it does though. On to the New York Stock Exchange. This was cool. We got a free tour and got to see the floor. Very tight. Ate at a pizza place there on Wall Street that was excellent, then hopped the #1/9 train to the South Ferry. We took the Ferry over to Staten island and saw the Statue of Liberty - the view of the NYC skyline from here is awesome. We also did Ellis island, but I was less impressed with this - turns out the original immigration building is boarded up across the river and basically in ruins - the building we toured was built recently to serve as a museum. The museum was cool, but after knowing the facts, that sense of history wasn't there. Oh well. After our ferry trips, we took the subway back to Penn Station and went up the Empire State Building. By this time it was dark, and the view was great - kind of unique to see the city lights from that height. I was surprised to find out that the observatory was outside. I was expecting windows instead of cold wind in my face. I took a couple of pictures, but I was probably just wasting film. Like anyone cares. Anyway, we went back to Times Square (much neater in the dark!) and ate at TGIFridays for a mere $30. Then it was back to base to rest my poor feet. The expo opens tomorrow (900+ booths all handing out free stuff!) so that should be exciting. I'm going to sleep good tonight...

Couple of picture comments:

pic 1: Where we ate dinner
2nd to last pic: Same picture as day 1 - only at night
last pic: The toilet at the Empire State Building (??)

Turns out the problem with the sorry picture quality is partly the fault of the camera, and partly the fault of the tools I'm stuck with...don't know if it will get better, but these still give a rough idea.
